No ensemble averaging below the black hole threshold

چکیده

A bstract In the AdS/CFT correspondence, amplitudes associated to connected bulk manifolds with disconnected boundaries have presented a longstanding mystery. possible interpretation is that they reflect effects of averaging over an ensemble boundary theories. But in examples dimension D ≥ 3, appropriate theories does not exist. Here we sharpen puzzle by identifying class “fixed energy” or “sub-threshold” observables claim do show averaging. These are involve states above ground state only fixed amount large N limit, and particular far from being black hole states. To support our claim, explore example = solutions Einstein’s equations never contribute these observables. demonstrate this requires some novel results about renormalized volume hyperbolic three-manifold, which prove using modern methods geometry. Why then any apparent averaging? We propose reflects chaotic nature physics fact Hilbert space describing limit.

Angular momentum at the black hole threshold

Assuming the existence of a spherically symmetric, self-similar solution of general relativity with matter that is locally an attractor of codimension one on the black hole threshold, we calculate the dependence of the black hole angular momentum on the initial data, near the black hole threshold and near spherical symmetry. As any smooth one-parameter family of initial data crosses the thresho...

Magnetic monopoles near the black hole threshold

We present new analytic and numerical results for self-gravitating SU(2)Higgs magnetic monopoles approaching the black hole threshold. Our investigation extends to large Higgs self-coupling, λ, a regime heretofore unexplored. When λ is small, the critical solution where a horizon first appears is extremal Reissner-Nordstrom outside the horizon but has a nonsingular interior. When λ is large, th...

The (unstable) Threshold of Black Hole Formation

In recent years it has become apparent that intriguing phenomenology exists at the threshold of black hole formation in a large class of general relativistic collapse models. This phenomenology, which includes scaling, self-similarity and universality, is largely analogous to statistical mechanical critical behaviour, a fact which was first noted empirically, and subsequently clarified by pertu...

Testing the black hole “no-hair” hypothesis

Black holes in General Relativity are very simple objects. This property, that goes under the name of “no-hair,” has been refined in the last few decades and admits several versions. The simplicity of black holes makes them ideal testbeds of fundamental physics and of General Relativity itself. Here we discuss the no-hair property of black holes, how it can be measured in the electromagnetic or...

S duality at the black hole threshold in gravitational collapse.

We study gravitational collapse of the axion/dilaton eld in classical low energy string theory, at the threshold for black hole formation. A new critical solution is derived that is spherically symmetric and continuously self-similar. The universal scaling and echoing behavior discovered by Choptuik in gravitational collapse appear in a somewhat di erent form. In particular, echoing takes the f...
